Garage by Claudia Lüthi

I myself have no car. 

But I have friends who have cars.

Whenever I am underway with them in their cars, it is very possible that we end in a garage…

…one of the thousands and thousands of garages that line up alongside the avenues and highways of Lima,

exhibiting their oily black facades and driveways, decorated with motor and oil and tire advertisements, casks, and piles of wires.

Inside they are mostly a huge mess, or what seems to the non-mechanic eye a mess.

A smeary mess of wrecked cars, auto parts and tools, cans and boxes, where every spot and crack, from the office over the workshop up to the toilet is stained with oil and smells of oil.


The garages are mostly run by empiric mechanics that have learned their skills from their fathers, uncles, brothers or cousins and sometimes do true miracles and sometimes, too, manage to ruin your car completely.

I have always had a fascination for these messy, dingy, greasy spectacles offered by the garages across the country… And while waiting for my friend’s car to get repaired, I happily make my way through the disarray with my camera…

23 Hours by Claudi Luthi

A few months back we asked aamora members to join in a project called 23 hours. The premise of the project was to cease all verbal communication for 23 hours (continuously) and photograph absolutely anything you are thinking, feeling or seeing during the 23 hours of silence.

Back To Black & White by Claudia Luthi

I don’t want to add fuel to the never ending discussion whether black and white photography is superior to color photography. Both have their pros and cons and reasons to be, and there sure are a whole lot of photographs that look better in the one or the other way, or in both, but with different moods and expressions. What is certain is that black and white photography is the realm of the shades and contrasts, and thus an art that is much closer to the conceptual than its replica in color. Nobody will doubt of the timeless and irresistible power that the great black and white photographs exert on the onlooker.

Alas, since I have turned to digital, I have left the black and white almost completely aside in favor of color photography. But when I started taking photos about 12 years ago, and installed therefore a rudimentary dark room in my bathroom, I was a fan of the tri-x film. And when I look today at those photographs printed on Ilford paper, I am prey to an ineffable nostalgia. Surely, black and white photography is per se the art of nostalgia, and also the exclusive realm of orthodox documentary photography, which at some point I came to despise.

Now, playfully re-discovering the black and white, I notice that it is still an incomparable and infinite world and I am filled with joy to experiment again with this simple but sophisticated discipline. Here are the first results. More here.

Souvenirs Art Opening May 12

Aamora member Alexis Gerard tells us: “I am thrilled to be a part of the Souvenirs exhibition curated by Aamora member Llorenc Rosanes.

Souvenirs will open at 8 pm on May 12 and run until July 17, 2011 at the Institut d’Estudis Ilerdencs in Lleida, Spain.”

The exhibition will include the work of: Michael Ast, Lisa Boughter, Steven Brooks, Benoit Chailleux, Alexis Gerard, Jim Hart and Claudia Luthi.

On the Spur of the Unfathomable by Claudia Luthi

I was walking down the block from home, with the vague intention to “go out and shoot photographs”.

Suddenly, it hit me that I didn’t have to go anywhere. Wherever I looked, it shined right back at me through the fleeting appearances of the moment,

already illusory before I lifted the camera and pressed the button,

in the vain attempt to hold them back and freeze, like a butterfly hunter pins his fragile prey.

And be it only for a moment, and another… anything, but awakening from the dream of beauty and terror, which always go together.

See, everything is already here in astonishing evidence, right in front of my nose, looking back at me… what do I say, staring with burning sharpness back at me.

Perplexed, in midst of what people call a sudden crisis, with no hint about the whereabout and what next,

moved by I don’t know what inspirational wind, I saw Gods face where ever I looked and intimately knew that each image is nothing but a reflection of all the other images.

Then a voice called my name. It was my neigbours daughter with a friend, coming home from school…

Notice the smile on her face?

Well, you see, in trying to keep the secret secret, all those walls were built. And indeed, in trying to unveil the secret, the walls were created.

And so, as long as there was trying to unveil the secret, the walls remained walls and the secret was always hidden. But with the collapse of the trying, with the collapse of trying to reach the secret as a goal to be achieved, the hidden collapsed into the walls, and the walls into the hidden.

And so, there was never really anything hidden, and there were never really any walls, in the first place. The obvious present appearance of it is all there is.

Huaqueo by Claudia Luthi

Peru has a very rich precolumbian history, of which literally thousands of archeological and mortuary remains speak, especially along the narrow desert strip of the Pacific coast. Huaqueo means looting and comes from Huaca, which in Quechua means “sacred place”, though today any ancient ruin or cemetery is called Huaca. Most of the precolumbian cultures that flourished in the river valleys of the coast of Peru since 3000 B.C. have buried their dead in ‘everlasting’ tombs, often mummifying the corpses of the important and noble people and clothing them in extraordinary richly woven textiles, as well as wonderful jewelery made of gold, silver and copper, and giving them all kinds of ceremonial ceramics and pots full of corn and beans and peanuts and coca leafs for their long journey through the ‘valley of the death’. The extremely dry conditions of the desert have preserved bodies and objects in an astonishing way.

It is known that precolumbian tombs have been looted ever since the Spaniards arrived (some say, that it was already a custom during the Inca period). The fact is, that the people of every village in every valley of this vast country have turned to the huaqueo, whenever there was a drought or any other reason for their crops to fail. And, of course, there has been ever since an international mafia that buys all these objects, mostly incredibly cheap and sells them for exorbitant prices to private collectors, maybe even to museums. There are though always people who exclusively dedicate themselves to the huaqueo – the huaqueros. They are considered by law as criminals and are naturally people from the underworld, full of gruesome stories of encounters with the dead. Some of them die in prison, some of strange and aweful diseases.
But, while the traditional huaqueros are supersticious and careful, and work only during nights of full moon and dig with ordinary shovels, the modern huaqueros have no scruples. They have modern equipment and use bulldozers and work in full daylight when ever allowed. The archeological contexts are thus being totally destroyed.

Not that I am too interested in all this. I never liked the principle of mummifying the dead and maintaining necrophilic relations with the past. But an archeologist from Cambridge and friend of mine, who has studied a certain area of the lower Ica valley, has asked me to make a photographic registration of all the mortuary remains, before the whole context was destroyed. So, during 3 days I toured the region and visited over 20 sites in company of an ex huaquero – son of one of the most famous huaqueros in the region, who has accompanied his father since he was 7 years old and since 1986 is a carpenter by trade. What I found was most dramatic. The cemeteries of at least half a dozen precolumbian cultures, all of them along or on top of the arid hills on the north side of the valley, have been looted over and over again.

The first thing a huaquero is after, is gold and jewelry. Gold, as we all know, is a fever. So, in order to get it, they desperately excavate the mummies and tear them apart, often breaking valuable pottery and textiles in the way. Later, sometimes after many years, they, or other huaqueros come back to the same tombs and scan them for the previously discarded pieces of ceramics and textiles and other objects, depending on the dictation of the market. Of course, where bulldozers have been used, there is nothing but mountains of dust and bones. So this business seems never ending. And still today one can find intact tombs – the dream of every huaquero and archeologist in the country.
