“Old paint on canvas, as it ages, sometimes becomes transparent. When that happens, it is possible, in some pictures, to see the original lines: a tree will show through a woman’s dress, a child makes way for a dog, a large boat is no longer on an open sea. That is called pentimento because the painter ‘repented,’ changed his mind. Perhaps it would be as well to say that the old conception, replaced by a later choice, is a way of seeing and then seeing again.

Maura is an aamora member. She tells us: “I received my B.F.A. from Bennington College in Vermont. It was there I learned how to “see” and ‘listen” abstractly. Before that, I studied in NYC with Daniel Green, a well-known portrait artist…. total realism, oil paints, “live” models….also, posed as a painter’s model during that period. Owned “Embellishments” – a business I created from being inspired by a small Indian mosaic frame found in the gift shop of the Jacksonville Museum of Art. – for 12 years. Now, I work at Merrill Lynch, helping people with their 401k plans. Photography has become my salvation.” – You can see more of Maura’s photography at jpgmag.com and her previous aamora posts here.

  1. This series is rich in muted tones mixed with rich color. An effort to be proud of that I enjoyed viewing! I always look forward to seeing new work.

  2. I enjoyed looking at your photos. Keep feeding your soul. I remember Lillian Hellman…

  3. Awesome Work, Gee, I thought I was the only one out there who looks at the world Differently In a Urban setting! ;o)

  4. this is shockingly beautiful work in its delicacy and careful and subtle rending of pattern and color. Kudos!

  5. Maura’s recent Aamora collection is fully alive with textures and subtleties …details that you might miss unless you linger . Not “site bytes.”…
The Lillian Hellman quote is so appropriate for this collection of images.

  6. Dudette, is this one of them Rorschach tests? I love those. Let me see…I think I see a baseball batter in the first one…and then I see a parrot in the second one…and then I see the Cheshire Cat about to smile in the third one…and then I see a fish in the upper corner of the fourth one…oh, and a hound standing on its hind legs in the upper left corner…and then I see…white flowers in the fifth one…did somebody die? Bummer.

    Anyway, very cool pics…rock on.

  7. Excellent series, Maura – the textures are so very palpable, and the details tell the whole story – nothing to add, nothing to supress…

  8. Beautifully seen and done. I agree with Gail; memories are stirred by these images.

  9. Such subtlety in these images Maura..like little stains or remnants.
